one of the fancy things to support a small force, maybe enough to run some of the more specialised units but not in silly numbers as you will still struggle v a larger force better able to play with objectives.
going much higher and you are into "I look at that unit of yours and delete it" areas with the whiff of cheddar in the air.
one thing that Battlefront got right with FoW in the v3 days, they changes the "standard" point levels every year to stop people gradually fine tuning lists, they cause range one year when what had been around 1,850 points dropped to around 1,450 for example
I think a lot could be done by saying take 500 points as a base, then taking 1d6 * 100 points extra for both sides and build a force with the resulting 600 - 1,100 points. perhaps with a max of two detachments and "rule of two" in place at that level.
maybe makes for a more interesting game as you are going to have to adapt to several point values but none of them excessive.
best bit though, when dice play their usual games its all over fast enough for a re-rack
