Flames of War, Early Total War at the gates of Moscow

Proposed next big game of Flames of War, late 1941 at the gates of Moscow as the tide of the war in the east hinges on this critical region.

Forces: Soviet & German from the Bararossa intelligence briefing only, each player bringing 1,600 points using any of the lists from this book. Other lists are possible but with caution to make sure they fit in. These to be assembled using the Total War rules, including Support Companies if desired

Soviet forces are on the defensive, with the advantage of terrain, as such it is proposed to have twice as many German forces as Soviet.

The board to be the usual Janco 'T' layout, the Soviets deploy near the kettle for a true objective to fight over. The Germans start at the opposite wider side of the board.

Terrain
The table within 24" of the Soviet board edge should be dense urban terrain, the next 12" a more open urban area. The remainder of the boards should be a mixture of woodland and small settlements/farms. There should be a single main road leading into the urban area, the open ground will otherwise have no significant roads. Any rivers are shallow streams representing slow going for tracked vehicles and difficult terrain for wheeled vehicles.

Objectives
The Germans place three objectives within 18" of the Soviet board edge, the Soviets may then move two of them up to 6" to represent confusion in the heat of battle.

Deployment
1. The Soviets deploy at least half of their companies anywhere within 36" of their table edge, these units may be dug in and gone to ground.

2. The Germans then deploy anywhere more than 32" from any Soviet team, if they are more than 48" from any Soviet team they may be dug in, all German teams may be gone to ground.

3. The Soviets deploy the remainder of their force, no closer than 48" from the nearest German team - these forces may be gone to ground but are not dug in. Note if there is space these may be deployed on the German side of the table as a flanking force taking advantage of gaps in the German line.

Game Start
Both sides may make recce moves, starting with the Germans and alternating recce platoons.

The game then starts with the Germans having the first turn, dug in artillery may bombard on the first turn, other German artillery uses the mobile battle rule and may not bombard on the first turn.

Victory Conditions
If the Germans capture any one of the three objectives by the end of the game they have secured a bridgehead in the outskirts of Moscow, otherwise the defenders have held.
