SS Side Project

Due to the likely length of this one its getting its own thread.

Anyway, on with the show, 15mm Battlefront metal SS Panzergrenadiers...

1. Starting point
Image

Cleaned up, primed black, airbrushed NATO black as a base

2. Pre-Shade
Image

Dry brushed white to pre-shade for later colours

3. Skin Tones - first pass
Image

Dry brushed with Flat Flesh

4. Skin Tones - wash
Image

Washed with Sepia Shade, puts a nice tone on the flesh thats better than the actual flesh wash

5. Skin Tones - first highlight
Image

Basic layer highlight with flat flesh

6. Skin Tones - second highlight
Image

Light glaze, flat flesh lightened slightly and a bit of red added

7. Field Grey - Base
Image

A few bits are destined to be in field grey, the base is 'extra dark green'

8. Field Grey - first highlight
Image

Layer with field grey, final highlight with a bit of grey grey added

9. Uniform - base
Image
Image

Dry brush of US Field Drab as the base for the main uniform

10. Uniform - wash
Image

Sepia wash to blend it all together

11. Uniform - first highlight
Image
Image

Layer with more US field drab

12. Uniform - second highlight
Image
Image

Final highlight, US field drab with a bit of camo beige added.

And thats it for the day, looks complex but this is basically just dry brushing and washing, have enough models for a platoon plus a 7th Panzerfaust MG team to swap in, took a few hours total to get this far.

Good start.
Plan on starting my Germans when exams are over, black base oat and a nice grey dry rush will be first steps and prob stay there.

Your black and first highlight is pretty much done for winter theme.

Did occur to me that a winter theme was possible when I did the flesh tones over that, a white glaze wash would pretty much nail it, possibly with a dark grey base in place of black.

Bit more work.

Bright Green Dots

Image

German camo bright green, applied using a pin with the head clipped off that was laying about, whats left after pinning a model somewhere. Dots applied roughly in pairs, aiming so that ever angle you view you can see some on the helmet, arms, torso and legs.

Dark Green Dots

Image

Luftwaffe camo green, applied the same way

Sand coloured dots

Image

Applied using flat flesh of all colours but it seems to work, same method as before. This is it for the dots, in theory there should also be dots in the base field drab and extra dark green colours, but they are not really needed.

Black base coat

Image

Flat black over the weapons, wood and boots

Gaiters in Russian Green

Image

Simply brush paint of the gaiters in a slightly thinned Russian Green to use the pre-shading as the highlight stage for this small area

Small details

Image
Image

Panzerfaust painted middle stone, weapons brushed with oily steel, canteens painted in field drab, bread bags and pouches in Russian Green, highlighted Green Grey.

Final group shot

Image

Platoon painted, ready for varnishing then basing.

Took a lot less time that I was expecting and while far from perfect they seem to have the right feel to them so happy enough.
