Crash & burning.. question

Tue Feb 23, 2016 7:45 pm

Have got hold of some 1:100 scale cars, to use as terrain for Team Yankee, cheap cheaply plastics from China, pre-painted (but will repaint a few as the colours are a bit modern).

Question is, an idea how to paint a few to look wreaked? thinking some as burnt out wreaks (can take the glass out easily enough) and others as on fire but have no idea how to make either look all that good.

May also have a go as softening with heat to 'crush' a few, again not too sure how and looking for any ideas.

Specifically:

Painting heavy rust, painting burnt out wreaks, modelling flames and smoke..

I am fairly sure most will be made of some kind of aluminium alloy so may be harder to rust naturally than their real life bigger brothers.
For wrecking, unless you have time to wait for a small child to play with it for a couple of months, surely you can do no better than a sack of cars and rocks smashed about a bit.
Perhaps soak in salt water as it may attack the cars when the rocks have taken off the paint a bit.

For burnt out look an easy way is to burn a candle, don't use the flame but hold it a short way away and it will soot up nicely. Used to do it on my model planes.

Most burnt out cars in films look to be first burnt to remove the paint but then washed out either with fireman's hose water or natural rain so get that all over rust effect, would think you were fine with that.

I am certainly no expert but like to get involved.

NB some of the guys on the gimps forum have done some very large mad max vehicles that look top and the goat will be the main point of contact.

Yeeees missed that bit
Guess you are down to paint and burn, not melt just soot up.
Damaging may be a bit more difficult as they won't don't up and if you use a soldering iron they may be a bit melty.

Bet they would look good on a base with some rubble strewn around.

This is what they looked like when they turned up, still have about 40 odd of them like this

Image

These are ok, but have that 'cheap chinese plastic' look to them, toy like

So a bit of a respray and black lining, head & tail lights etc, basic stuff really and we have these

Look a bit better, next job is to do another ten, then burn them out..
