Looking for a suitable material to use as the basis for making roads and bases for area terrain such as woods. So sand/paint/flock must stick to it and it must be cheap and readily avaible. Ideas?

used cork floor tiles, upside down, for roads here, painted with a bit of emulsion. dirt cheap, easy to cut, nice texture.

you could use them for woods etc, but you need to paint both sides to stop them warping, not hard though

For woods and other bases the best thickness is the wood at the back of cheaper wardrobes.
You can also keep going to B&Q they have off cuts near the wood cutting section that's are like 25p.

Roads I have seen some nice ones made from belt sander fabric, if you can do with felt I can get you off cuts but it don't do it for me.
