Give it a try.
Guess an issue may be the wash wont stick as well, could wipe/wear off and the varnish may have filled in some of the detail.
Interested to know, I do paint over varnish sometimes to repair chips etc.

yes, indeed it can produce some interesting effects.

over gloss varnish its iffy, over matt its no problem at all and can actually be better (avoids issues with some colours under being glossier than others), satin varnishes can produce a smoother finish.

oil washes require varnish, for acrylics give it a go, just varnish back over the top

once its dry its dry with acrylic, not coming off.

if you stick matt or semi matt varnish over first though it will be like painted a wash over something you've just painted anyway. its only really gloss, or models that have greasy fingerprints that muck about with washes
