Leopard's FoW British

Postby leopard » Sat Aug 16, 2014 5:19 pm

Oddball mix, currently clearing the table of part painted models, this weeks contribution to my FoW British as follows:

Late War, pair of PSC fireflies
Image

Built so my two armoured platoons can have either a single firefly or a pair of them in

Early War, scout carrier patrol
Image

Second such patrol in the army, so now have six of the little swines, these coloured as a separate unit but could be run as just a second patrol in the first easily enough, depends on the army list.

Revell 1:144 scale model, suitable adapted with a magnet. paint is a mixture of the usual and also a few Tamiya colours, alcohol based acrylics..

Bit more for my Early War forces

Armoured Company

Mk VIB light tank platoon

Cruiser tank platoon

Company HQ Platoon

Regimental HQ Platoon

A second company is sitting half painted to go with the first.

The overly bright 'cruiser tank green' tones down well with a brown wash.

Mk IVB are in the green/brown to go with the infantry support units, in theory they will be replaced by some more, probably MK VIC, in the two tone green.

There are more bits but the sun went in before I could take pics.

The BEF have now had a few games, and true to form lost every single one of them, often 6:1 defeats as well.. Think they need a bit of a re think.

Wondering if having tows for the artillery would help, big problem is that 12 gun battery is 25%-33% of the army and is not too hard to hide from, a bit of mobility could make them a lot nastier as well as making the observers a lot more useful. 12 quad tractors....

How about dropping down to eight gun.
I actually really like it, enough infantry to hold stuff, AT guns to scare people away, carriers and tiny tanks to hunt peeps down and artillery to keep everything honest.

Can go to eight guns, there is an option for making the whole lot Veterans as well, eight guns puts them all as 25pdr, so they drop the option for the 4.5" howitzer, may be a better bet overall though as the guns themselves are better, the 18pdr is pants as artillery, long range mortar basically.

That Divisional Cavalry list seriously has issues taking down enemy armour though if it has to attack, not sure you saw it in that game but that little horde that approached had zero answers to the mighty panzer III, the scout carriers were marginal but you vaped them early on.

Thinking back with the actual infantry, who look very similar - one more platoon of bods, one less each of Mk VIB and scout carriers, but being infantry against a list like yours would have been the ones dug in and waiting.. That list also has an option to take Matilda I, which may be armed with a spud gun but have armour similar to a tiger so take a bit of shifting.

Either way the guns are core to this, and essentially need the mechanisation elements providing to stop them being easy to ignore and allow them to up sticks and scarper when scared.

BEF infantry looks a highly defensive list, seems like many British infantry lists to struggle to advance but is evil to have to shift. really need to get 1st armoured up to speed.. that would have been a fun game, the dizzy heights of armour zero, and No HE guns.. but on some decently fast moving hulls that fire at full RoF on the move..

Slight progress, the EW boys are not due to be run again until the next EW event in 2016, however a nice slow project is ongoing to update them and provide a bit of mobility to the guns and other units where transports are possible.

To this end...

Have been experimenting with resins, the quality is not amazing but acceptable for a first effort, just a few air bubbles here and there, mostly able to be covered by a bit of weathering anyway. Given the lack of vac or pressure casting equipment I'm happy enough anyway for basic one part moulds.

Need to run off a few more then get some paint on them.

Will get better at this, but as the saying goes, good enough for government work, especially given how often and for how long they appear on the table. Does seem that they can win you the game at the right time though.

Just a sod the list has no transport option for the infantry, will be depending on HMG teams in trucks to get to an objective and hold it while the foot sloggers catch up.

Do have some bren carriers and OP carriers for the artillery observers though which may help.

The mould silicone is easy enough to work with, like pouring treacle but it gets everywhere, but by gork the resin itself stinks very much an outside only thing now, otherwise my arms will be removed and fed to kittens.
