you're not going to lose them in a hurry at least.

"da plan" here is simply to get some painted and see how it looks, I've got some 30mm and 40mm deep bases (wrong width though) from other things to experiment with. To me it needs to look good and fit in with game definitions to make telling unit types apart quick and easy.

All my units are sized for three ranks in terms of model count it appears (typically 36 - 40 models per unit), though I'm planning on having them a bit closer together than you've shown there. It looked ok on 40mm deep bases, have yet to try on 30mm though

Decision made.
80mm x 30mm for me. Def 3 and poss 4 ranks.

Dale I think yours will be fine 3 ranks to an 80mm x 30mm base and still leave a bit of room for diorama bits.

Will bring in a couple of bases so you can take em home and see how they do for you.

cheers, will give it a go, aim to get some primer sprayed tonight sometime after being obliterated by Picts (again) then get a brush on some tomorrow and Friday to at least have some to experiment with.

Got the cav and front line of inf stuck to bases.
The inf I think I will have to do a row at a time as it will be difficult to sand between em.

Done commanders base now in desert stylee.

Five cavalry units are waiting for the sand basing to dry then can be finished, added a small banner to one to denote which is the Persian guard cavalry.
Front rank of infantry is waiting for paint to dry on the base.

If going with multiple ranks it looks like the trick is to dress the ranks so they are really close together after painting their bases with whatever the main colour of the base will be and do the really detailed work around the edges.

So far the only thing fully completed is the boss

Happy with him and at least he is not Russian Green

Sand and PVA
Paint with B&Q Clay tester pot
Drybrush with cream tester pot
Drybrush with white

It is what I did for my 8th army basing

I have pretty much those exact colours here.. and used essentially the same (with filler, not sand) for my Skaven...

cheers

Gota love B&Q, most of my black is artist acrylic as well though to be honest I usually only use it to edge the bases.
On with the infantry now, worked out how to base em in three ranks and still leave a gap.
I have also based the front rank a little back from the leading edge so I can play around with it a bit.
I do think I could get four ranks in but that would def be left to a 40mm deep base so happy with the three on 30mm bases.

If I go for another force it will be ancient British.

Completed the cavalry units now. Amended first post with what is finished.

Stick up some pics tomorrow and aim to bring them in.

NB Cavalry much more enjoyable and easier to do than the infantry.
