Couldn't sleep so decided to have a crack at the first couple of units.
Spent far too long on em and don't think the effect justifies the effort.
2 x Light Horse Archers finished being painted need to wait for the bases to come before putting em on.
Painted em like 15mm with base coat, wash and highlight but don't think this is a practical way to churn through them all.
Force started at least
Think I will go for
Medium Cav - 10 to a base
Light Cav - 6 to a base
Scythed Chariots - 3 to a base
Force to be done

Thinking here is prime, base coat, light wash, done
And may skip the wash to be honest...
May have a go at cleaning a unit up and prepping for paint this week

I know, stupid right.
I even gave them a quick dry brush with good old Iraqi sand after the highlights.
Can't wait for the bases to arrive, got the commander the great dome himself the medium cav and front unit of Immortals stuck to sticks.
The sculpt quality is fantastic.

Hope to keep the motivation levels up.
Undercoated a unit of Immortals and two units of cavalry and the general is nearly painted.
If they do a good job getting the bases out I hope to have some based up.
By eck there are lots of the buggers, my Immortals are 48 in a unit. I do think 4 rows of 12 would look great but worry about being able to base between them. And of course if I only put 24 or 36 to a base they go further.

Had another dabble.
Two units of medium cavalry, one of guard cavalry and unit of Sparabara inked and drying ready for some highlighting. The more I look the more detail in these sculpts.
They look a bit garish but hey they are Persians.
Going to clean and prep a unit of archers next so I have one full sized unit.
Despite ordering bases I am still torn on doing em 40mm x 40mm, intend to set some up and see which I prefer.
The infantry units are going to be massive at 96 men.

3 cavalry and a unit of immortals are done with varnish drying.
Have started to base my commander on arid type basing, as Dave has already mentioned I may actually go back to old standard of sand, ink and dry brush.
Partially due to terrain we will play on but also because it is much easier to get to flow between the ranks than paint is.
If I get an hour later I am going to start on the bow armed immortals.
If I decide to go with 36 to a unit I can squeeze a few more units out of what I have but there are tonnes of em anyway.
My painting table has more colour on it than it has ever seen, years of Russians mean I am used to doing green but not much else.

Here are some pics of the bases
30mm and 40mm deep. For me you could get a massed effect of 4 ranks deep on a 30mm but really think three is good without being too cramped. If you want to add some additional details to the base like dead enemy or a few skirmish troops there is still some space.
3 ranks is probably better on a 30mm deep base.
Pics below the figs are spaced out more than I intent them to be when based up. My Sparabara and Immortals are sculpted with shields to the side. I have painted one row with the face on the side so I can base em with shield facing forwards.
https://ibb.co/LZCLRBdI really dont know if I prefer the three or four ranks deep. If going 4 then def the 40mm bases would be better.
https://ibb.co/TkVVy6cHowever 80mm x 80mm looks like a massive block which is what my large units have to be
